Qi2.2 25W build

Qi2.2 25W wireless charger: what the faster profile needs

The 2025 profile doubles the magnetic ceiling to 25W. It also doubles the heat, which is why a 25W charger is a thermal design before it is a coil.

25W is a pair, not a charger. If the adapter cannot hold the input, or the phone does not support Qi2.2, the build delivers what the pair allows and the box claim has to say so.

25W is a charger and a phone

The Qi2.2 profile raises the magnetic ceiling to 25W. A phone that supports it negotiates the higher rate. A phone that does not falls back to Qi2 at 15W or lower, and nothing on the charger changes that.

So the first question in a 25W programme is the phone list, and the second is the adapter. A 25W charger on a 20W adapter is a 20W charger with a 25W label.

The heat path is the product

Doubling the power roughly doubles the loss in the coil and the power stage. The charger has to move that heat somewhere, and in a sealed housing the only route is a shield, a spreader and enough surface area to convect it away.

That is why a 25W build is taller and heavier than the 15W build with the same footprint, and why a 25W product in a thin plastic shell derates after a few minutes and never reaches its ceiling.

  • The temperature at which the build derates, and the rate it holds before that.
  • The surface the charger sits on, because a soft surface traps heat.
  • The room temperature the claim assumes. A 25C lab is not a 35C desk.

Where the extra wattage pays

A premium phone with a large battery, a user who charges in short bursts, and a retail price that can carry the power stage. Outside those three, 15W is the better economic answer, and a 25W label on a mixed fleet invites a comparison the product cannot win.

Before the order

  • Phone list: name the Qi2.2 models the 25W claim is tested against.
  • Adapter: ship one rated above 25W, or state the requirement on the box.
  • Derating: publish the temperature, not just the peak wattage.
